Maesmawr Hall 2008

History / findings:

It is believed that a Roman fort used to be on the grounds of what is now "Maesmawr Hall "and a Roman road ran through it. It is also believed that a battle was fought very close to it between the Romans and the Celts - one of the last major Roman/Celt battles.

After this there was a Welsh Long House and it is believed that this was added to to make the current building. The Victorians then added to the house by adding to the rear of the building to match the design of the original front of the house.

Needless to say the building and surrounding area are ripe with history, legends and prime for a haunting or 10.

A soldier has been seen in the grounds wearing a long trench coat dating from either WW1 or WW2. He was felt by one of the guests during a Paranormal Evening and he was seen by a member of staff one rainy night by the back gates.

He vanished as quickly as he was seen.

A grounds man has been seen in all areas of the grounds. His only striking feature is white hair. A Great Dane has been seen both outside and inside the building. He has also been heard growling by various people including members of Newtown Paranormal, in the Panelled Room for a meal. A Grey Lady has been seen walking round the grounds and in the hallway inside. This spirit has been picked up by mediums that have visited the location. Newtown Paranormal also has a picture from Peter Sparrow who attended a Paranormal Evening event that seems to show the face of a lady and other spirits!

A Legion of Roman soldiers has been seen marching in the grounds towards the building. As they approach the building they march under it. A white horse has been seen in the grounds and also around Caersws. It is rumoured that Elizabeth I had pure bred white horses from this area. On the ground floor in the Panelled Room there is a secret panel which now has an exit sign on it and people have seen an Elizabethan Lady move through this secret panel. She does not interact with anyone in the room so this appears to be a residual haunting, just re-tracing steps she took while alive.

A black cat has also been seen in the same room, no-one knows if this relates to the Elizabethan Lady. A couple of years ago staff were putting up the Christmas tree, and the star at the top was lifted off the tree on its own. A pastor type figure has been seen moving along the outside walls of the Panelled Room through the wall into the hallway, then into the bar area and then down through to the restaurant towards the kitchen before finally disappearing. This is normally seen from the outside. The figure would have to pass through a number of walls in order to complete this journey. On the stairs a man has been seen in clothes that fit the Charles I period. He normally comes down the stairs and then stands by the fireplace.

On a Paranormal Evening an EMF meter (Electro Magnetic Field Meter) was used and this had raised readings on the stairs and when it was followed it went all the way up the stairs to one of the rooms and then stopped. The people using the EMF meter could see no obvious electro magnetic sources such as electrical wiring that could have caused this. Members of staff have heard a baby crying on a number of occasions all over the building, this does not appear to be limited to a specific location

In one of the rooms there have been occurrences where women have had their hair stroked while they have been sat on the bed, this has not happened to men in the same room.

Just so the men do not feel left out there is a spirit of a woman who will follow men, this has been experienced by members of Newtown Paranormal and it is a friendly feeling.

Robin Drwg - or Wicked Robin - is said to haunt the grounds outside. He sometimes takes on the form of a bull, and is a more sinister spirit. He did something evil - no-one know what - and terrorised the area. His rampaging isn't just confined to Maesmawr. Three ministers drowned him in the lake that used to be in the grounds, but his presence is still very much felt in the area.

Below is a possible EVP picked up in what was room 14 at Maesmawr Hall during our investigation with the County Times.

conclusion:

This was one of the first investigations that we carried out as a group and it proved very interesting. Rory captured an interesting image on his digital camera that has been published in the County Time and also commented on by members of the Most Haunted team and it proved to be a host topic on the Most Haunted website forum. As it was our first investigation we were not in complete control of our surroundings so I do not feel that we can fully comment on what we found as it could have been affected but outside variables. One interesting thing is that a company that operates "Haunted Breaks" was hosting an event the following night, Rory had been speaking to some of the guests that had already checked in and passed on some of the many stories that he knows, the owners then fed back to Rory that the medium that had been employed by the other company picked up on a number of the stories that Rory had passed onto the guests. We will let you decide on that one!
