History:

The Old Blue Bell Inn Newtown is the old Woolworths building on Broad Street and dates back 170 years to 1839

Rory from our group has over the years heard a number of stories about the Woolworths building (from when it was owned by Woolworths) and more recently when it was used by its current owners.

 

• A figure was seen in the main store and people thought it was the manager Mark so called his mobile but he was at home in bed. Mark came to the store and there was nobody inside and no alarms had been set off.
• A child was seen running the store in the same area that the mans figure had been seen.
• Dating back to when the Blue Bell sat on the site, Sergeant -Major John Howe of the 10th Hussars went outside to break up a disturbance on Broad Street wielding a sword, swearing he would cut off seven men's heads at once. This had little effect on the mode and he had to make a hasty retreat. A few years later (November 1844) Howe who then kept the Bell Inn in Penygloddfa lost his own head. He was feeding a kit of seven pigs when he fell and struck his head on the floor of the sty. He was rendered unconscious and bled profusely, the pigs were attracted to the smell and having licked it up continued to feast until they had devoured the old soldiers head. Findings:

• A number of light anomalies were captured on camera. This could have been the first signs of spirit manifestation or as some theories go this could have been dust moving about the room. Looking at the video we do not believe that these were insects.
• We had strange EMF readings in the back store room by the stairs. There is a large junction box under the stairs but the high EMF readings were not coming from the junction box, there were actually coming from outside the junction box room. Rory picked up the presence of a woman in this area but could pickup any clear name.
• Upstairs Rory picked up the name Michael Lloyd Jones and also "Captain Jack". We also heard thuds like boots walking across the floor.
• Also upstairs Mark was sure that he saw a figure moving. At first he thought that it was Nick but Nick was in a different area compared to where Mark saw the shadow moving.
• Downstairs in the main show room the who group thought they saw a shadow moving. This was towards the back of the store an although the group could not be sure what the shadow was and if it was caused by anybody in the group, we all saw it and each member has said that it was not them moving.

Conclusions:

While we certainly picked up some unexplained noises on our video camera and some interesting light anomalies this is not concrete proof that this building is "Haunted". While the evidence that we have captured seems to indicate paranormal activity it is open to debate. Unfortunately we have not been able to capture anything that will stand up 100% as paranormal. We believe that this site requires further investigation, members of our group who are in touch with spirit certainly believe that there something happening at this location, as yet we cannot be sure what this is.
